July is the middle of winter in Cairns, but tropical winter is very different from winter in Australia’s southern cities. Days are generally warm and pleasant rather than hot and humid, while evenings and early mornings can be surprisingly cool.
Cairns’ dry season runs roughly from May through October, with July typically bringing plenty of sunshine and much less rainfall than the summer months. Long-term Bureau of Meteorology climate statistics put the average July maximum temperature at around 26°C.
The combination of warm days, lower humidity and generally settled weather makes July particularly comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

It is worth remembering that Cairns is still in the tropics. Even in July, strong sunshine is possible, so sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat remain essential.
If you are travelling into the mountains or spending time in the Atherton Tablelands, Kuranda or the Daintree, take a light jumper or jacket. Temperatures can feel noticeably cooler than they do around the Cairns Esplanade.

The region’s winter weather is also particularly suited to outdoor adventures. Queensland’s tourism authorities describe the June-to-August period as the dry season, with clear conditions making it an excellent time for reef and rainforest activities.
The main disadvantage is that July is a popular time to visit. Accommodation, reef cruises and some of the more popular tours can become busy, particularly around school holiday periods.
If you have specific tours you definitely want to experience, booking ahead is a sensible idea.

Yes. July is traditionally one of the busiest periods of the year for tourism in Cairns.
The combination of Australia’s winter school holidays, dry-season weather and excellent reef conditions attracts visitors from interstate and overseas.
This does not mean you should avoid July. In fact, the weather is one of the reasons July is such a popular time to visit.
It simply means that some of the most popular activities can fill up.
If your Cairns holiday plan includes specific experiences such as a Great Barrier Reef cruise, Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail, a Daintree tour or a liveaboard dive trip, it is sensible to organise these in advance.
Events and What’s On in July
There are generally plenty of events, markets, festivals, sporting activities and cultural experiences taking place throughout Cairns and Tropical North Queensland during July.

July Tour Highlights

You don’t need a special tour to see the whales, sightings can occur on any Cairns Reef Tour this time of year and if close enough most boats will stop for a short look.
What Should You Pack for Cairns in July?
Packing for Cairns in July is relatively straightforward.
For most days you will want lightweight tropical clothing, but it is worth bringing a few warmer items as well.
